Abstract
The study was concerned with the illocutionary acts that occurs in characters utterances in comic “Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man”. In this study, it had two objectives such as: (1) To identify the types of illocutionary acts found in the comic, (2) To explain the context of illocutionary acts in the utterances of the characters in comic. The data source in this study were taken from online comic. In this study, the writer used observation method to collecting the data. Whereas descriptive qualitative used to analyze the data in this study. The data were analyzed based on theory of Illocutionary Act by lele (1976) and theory context of situation by Halliday and Hasan (1989). The result of this study showed that there were 77 data of illocutionary act found in this comic. Among all types of illocutionary acts, representative is the most type of illocutionary act found in this comic, which there are 30 or about 38,96%. Followed by expressive with 25 data or about 32,47%, directive with 13 data, commissive with 6 data and declarative the rarely type used in this comic. The study concludes that the most dominant types illocutionary act found in this comic was representative, because by using statements of fact and assertion, the comic stays true to the essence of Sherlock Holmes's character and effectively portrays his unique approach to solving mysteries.
