Abstract
Taboo words are terms that might be taken as harsh, impolite, and offensive
language. Taboo is a widespread phenomenon in society since the influence of
culture and it also appears in all kinds of media, including movies, music, and
television dramas. This research aims are to analyzed the types of taboo words
used the theory proposed by Batistella (2005) and functions of taboo words used
the theory from Wardaugh (2006) which uttered by the characters in Me Time
movie using sociolinguistics approach.This research applied descriptive
qualitative method to analyzed the data in the movie. The Me Time movie's
transcript and video served as the data's primary sources. The findings of this
study are presented as follows. First, the four types of taboo words are appeared in
the movie such as epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The total data found
was 82 data which obscenity is the most commonly used by the character. Second,
from the four functions of taboo words, there are three of them are appeared in
this movie. They are to draw attention, to show contempt, and to be provocative.
The most functions of the characters used taboo words are to draw attention and to
show contempt because dominantly the characters uttered the taboo word to
attract the attention of each other
