Abstract

This research is conducted to investigate the types of slang and the slang function in the movie entitled Guns Akimbo. Generally people think that American slang is dominantly used by teenager or black society. Therefore, it is interesting to conduct slang research on ordinary American family. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in conducting the research. Meanwhile, sociolinguistics is applied as the frame of the study. The source of the data is obtained from the movie script. This study applied the theory from Allan and Burridge (2006) about the types of slang word and theory of function of slang word by Hymes (1989). In conducting the research, the writer found two findings. The first finding is the slang type. There are five types of slang employed by the characters in Guns Akimbo movie. the type of slang word are fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym and clipping. Meanwhile, the second finding is the slang functions of the use of slang. There are seven functions in this movie. They are to address, to form intimate atsmophere, to initiate relax conversation, to express impression, to revel anger, to humiliate and to show intimacy. This research is expected to give better better knowledge about American slang and better understanding about slang term.
