Abstract

This study deals with analysis of the flouting maxim in a sitcom movie entitled “Friends”. There are two problems analyzed in this study, (1) What maxims are flouted in Friends movie? (2) Why are those maxims flouted by the characters in Friends movie? The aims of this study are to find out and identify the maxims that are flouted in Friends movie and also to analyze the reason of flouting maxim in utterances based on the context of situation in Friends movie. The data that has been collected from the script was analyzed using Cooperative Principle theory by Grice (1975) in analyzing the maxim that fluoted by the character and using Illocutionary Function theory by Leech (1983) in analyzing the reasons for the characters flouted the maxim. This study used descriptive qualitative method to present a complete picture in problem solving on a number of variables from the flouting maxim. The results of this study concluded that from the 25 analyzed data, the flouting maxim of quantity occurs 5 times (20%), the flouting maxim of quality occurs 7 times (28%), the flouting maxim of relation occurs 9 times (36%) and the flouting maxim of manners occurs 4 times (16%).
