Abstract

This study aimed (1) to find out the types of of code switching found in Deddy's corner program and (2) to describe the reasons. Qualitative method were used for this study to find out and describing , the data were collected from four part of videos. The method was applied in order to give clear description on the data according to theory proposed by Poplack (1980) are applied for find out the types of code switching and theory by Hoffman (1991) to describe the reasons of code switching. First, three types of code switching were found with total 32 utterances, namely inter-sentential switching 8 utterances, intra-sentential switching 21 utterances and extra switching or tag switching 3 utterances and it showed the most dominant was intra-sentential switching. Second, seven reasons of code switching were found, namely talking about particular things 6 utterances, quoting somebody else 1 utterance, being emphatic about something 5 utterance, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors) 4 utterances, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors 9 utterances, repetition used for clarification 3 utterances and expressing group identity 4 utterances, it showed the most dominant reason was intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors.
