Abstract

Human conduct has a significant impact on the human tendency to live a satisfying life when it comes to meeting life's needs. In this case, the hierarchy of needs is applied in human daily life. The Hierarchy of Needs is a theory of motivation that means we are motivated by our needs as human beings. The theory was proposed by one psychologist, Abraham Maslow. It is a five-tiered model of human needs such as physiological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs that are frequently portrayed as hierarchical tiers within a pyramid wherein the lower needs must be met before higher needs can be achieved. In this research, the aims are to find out how the main character in the film Frances Ha (2012), Frances Halladay can fulfill her needs as viewed by the theory of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943) and to find out the characteristics of Frances Halladay based on Boggs and Petrie’s theory of characterization in the film (2008). This study applied a descriptive qualitative method in revealing the data and used the dialogue in the script and some scenes in the film to collect the data. The result shows that the main character, Frances Halladay, who is described as a funny, messy, and people-pleasing person, can fulfill the five levels of the hierarchy of needs, including physiological needs, safety needs, love, and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. As a result of the findings, it can be stated that the main character, Frances Halladay is capable of meeting those needs, despite the fact that she faces many obstacles in life.
