Abstract
The undertaking of this study was mainly intended to find out whether or not speaking skill of the seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Petang can be improved through three-step interview. This study made use of classroom action research subjects were VII A students of SMPN 3 Petang who were selected based on the preliminary observation. Based on the result of the pre-test the main score of the students was 49.12, which was carried out in the pre-cycle, it showed that the subjects had low ability in speaking. This study was carried out by implementing a three-step interview in two cycles. The result showed that there was improvement concerning the subjects’ ability in speaking. In post-test I, the main score of the students was 65.62 and in post-test II the main score of the students was 75.78. The researcher also administered a questionnaire in order to know the subjects’ responses toward the implementation of three-step interview. The subjects also responded positively toward the implementation of three-step interview which the total of percentage of statements strongly agree was 79.87%, total of percentage of statement agree was 14.78%, total of percentage of statement disagree was 4.84%, and 0.51% speaking skill of the seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Petang in academic year 2020/2021 can be improved through three-step interview.
