Abstract

This research presents the code mixing used by the characters in the Hello Cello Series novel which consists of two novels, namely the Hello Cello novel (2022) and the Hello Again Cello novel (2023). The aims of this research is to determine and analyze the level of code mixing and the reasons why code mixing is used in the novel. Observation methods are used to collect data and qualitative methods are used to analyze or describe problems clearly. This research uses formal and informal methods in presenting data. The theory used in this research is Suwito's (1983) theory which refers to the level of code mixing and Hoffman's (1991) theory which refers to the reasons for code mixing that occurs in the Hello Cello Series novels. Based on the research results, there are 97 total code-mixing data found in the Hello Cello Series novel. Out of 97 data, there were six levels of code mixing found, namely word level with a total of 49 data, phrase level with 22 data, hybrid level with 14 data, repetition level with 2 data, idiom level with 7 data and clause level with a total of 3 data. The most dominant level used in the data is the word level of codemixing. Meanwhile, seven reasons for code mixing were found as to why the characters in the novel used code mixing in their speech, namely 77 data on talking about a particular topic, 2 data on quoting somebody else, 7 data on emphatic about something, 5 data on interjection, 4 data on repetition used for clarification, 1 data on intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and finally 1 data on expressing group identity.
