Abstract

very individual intending to engage in conversation should grasp the significance of turn-taking, particularly in mechanisms to minimize violations and ensure smooth communication among participants. This study focuses on the conversation between the host and guest stars of the Graham Norton Show on the S25E12- Tom Hanks, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Holland, and Jake Gyllenhaal episode. This study aims to identify the types of turn-taking mechanisms employed and to analyze how turn-taking unfolds between the host and guest stars during the conversation. There were 72 data in this research, and the descriptive qualitative method was utilized. Turn-taking mechanisms were analyzed using Stenstrom's (1994) theory and Lambert's (2012) qualitative theory to support data analysis. The findings revealed the presence of three types of turn-taking mechanisms: taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn. The turn-taking mechanism that mostly occurs on the Graham Norton Show is “taking the turn in the part of taking over” with 30 occurrences. The significance of these findings lies in highlighting the importance of turn-taking in facilitating smooth communication and minimizing disruptions during conversations
