Abstract

This research aims at examining code-switching occurrences observed in specific videos from The Friday Podcast on Spotify. The objectives are to analyze the various types of code-switching and to analyze the motivations behind the use of code-switching in the speech of Iyas Lawrence and the guest stars featured on the podcast. The classification of code-switching proposed by Poplack (1980) and the theoretical framework from Hoffman (1991) focusing on the reasons for codeswitching were used as guiding principles for this research. A qualitative methodology was employed to analyze the identified issues. The study's summary revealed the presence of all types and reasons for code-switching within the dataset. The majority of the data, constituting 208 instances or 78% of the occurrences were categorized as intra-sentential switching. There were 36 instances of inter-sentential switching, accounting for 13% of the data. Tag switching represented the lowest frequency among the types of code-switching, with a total of 23 instances, making up 9% of the data. These findings suggest that Iyas and the guest stars have achieved a high level of bilingualism, evident from the considerable frequency of codeswitching occurrences in their speech. Furthermore, the primary reason observed for Iyas Lawrence and the guest stars to switch codes during the podcast was related to talking about a particular topic. This predominant reason accounted for 57% of the occurrences, totaling 153 instances. Expressing group identity emerged as the least frequent reason, constituting only 1% of the occurrences, identified in just 2 instances of data.
