Abstract
The aims of this study is concerns with the type and the process of derivational suffixes. The data were taken from the novel Moby-Dick written by Herman Melville, this novel consists of 135 chapter and 786 pages. The descriptive qualitative was used in collecting and analyzing the data. This study used tree diagram model to show the process of derivational suffixes. The theory used in this study is theory proposed by Fromkin (2007) and the supporting theory is taken from Plag (2002). The result shows that all the types of derivational suffixes were found, those are derivational suffixes noun to adjective with 49 data (15%), such as -ed, - ish, -ous, -ate, -full, -ing, derivational suffixes adjective to noun with 47 data (14%) which are -ness, -ion, -ity, derivational suffixes verb to noun 90 data (27%) which were -al, -ance, -ation, -ence, -er, -ion, -dom, -ing, derivational suffixes verb to adjective 110 data (33%) those suffixes are included -able, -ive, -(n) y, derivational suffixes adjective to adverb 8 data (2%) which is only suffix –ly, derivational suffixes noun to verb 15 data (5%) those were -ate, -ish, -ize, and the last one derivational suffix noun to noun with 13 data (4%) included suffixes ship and –ity. The total data that were found 322 data and the most frequent appearance derivational suffixes verb to adjective with 110 data or 33%.
