Abstract

This research aimed to examine subordinate clauses identified within the Online CNN Newspaper. The primary objective of this research h is to discern the various types of subordinate clauses present in the Online CNN Newspaper and elucidate the constituent structure of subordinate clauses within complex sentences through the application of tree diagrams. These diagrams serve the purpose of illustrating the specific phrases or clauses modified by the subordinate clauses identified in the online CNN newspaper. The data utilized for this study were sourced from the online CNN newspaper and subjected to both qualitative and quantitative analyses. In the qualitative analysis, the data were scrutinized in accordance with the theoretical framework posited by Miller (2002) in the entitled "An Introduction to English Syntax" and Kroeger (2005) in "Analysing Grammar." The quantitative method was employed to present the analyzed data through tabulation. The findings of this study reveal the prevalence of complement clause consists of 7 sentences (23,4%), relative clause consists of 6 sentences (20%), and adverbial clause which consists of 17 sentences (56,5%). To conclude this research the complement clause is formed by complementizer that. Relative clause formed by complementizer who and that. Meanwhile, the adverbial clause was utilized when, while, before, since (time), because (reason), if (condition), as (concession)
