Abstract

The title of this research is An Analysis of Directive Illocutionary Act Found in The End of the F***ing World Series (Season 1). This research focused on analyzing and classifying the types of directive illocutionary act used by all characters and the support of the context of situations for directive illocutionary act. This research applied the theory from Yule (1996) to classify the types of directive illocutionary act uttered by all characters and the theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985) to analyze the context of the situations. This research employed a descriptive qualitative methodology conducted with library research. This research found four types of directive illocutionary act in the TV series entitled The End of the F***ing World Season 1 uttered by all the characters. Command, order, request and suggestion are the types of directive illocutionary act found in this TV series. From 156 data found, the command has the highest frequency with (39%) percentage. The command is the most appealing type in this TV series because it tells the adventures of teenagers who face many problems, ranging from conflicts in personality, friendship, family, theft, and murder. Dealing with all these problems requires an action through a command from an utterance that can make people take action to solve all problems. The lowest number of occurrences is request with a (13%) percentage. Context of situations is essential to support the use of directive illocutionary acts. Inside an utterance containing the directive illocutionary act, knowing the context of the situation needs to be understood to know how the utterance can occur, the topic of conversation, the place, and the relationship between participants and the language used in the conversation.
