AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING FOUND IN NESSIE JUDGE’S INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS

This research focuses on types and reasons for code switching in Nessie Judge's Instagram captions. This study has specific objectives, namely (1) to identify the types of code switching in Nessie Judge's Instagram captions and (2) to analyze the reasons of code switching found in Nessie Judge's Instagram captions. The data were collected from the captions taken from Nessie Judge’s Instagram account in this study, the data were analyzed using a qualitative method. This method was applied to provide a clear analysis of the data according to the theories of Appel and Muysken (1987) and Hoffman (1991). The findings of this research show that all types and reasons for code switching have been identified. There are 110 data of code switching found, they were categorized into, 29 data (26,6) data of tag switching, 30 data (27.27%) data of intra-sentential switching, and 51 data (46.36%) data of intrasentential switching. The reasons of code switching are found in the captions, such as; talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjections, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying speech content for the interlocutor and expressing group identity. The phenomenon of code switching has become increasingly complex over time. The phenomenon of code switching occurs more often in social media. In the field of linguistics, code switching is an intriguing topic to discuss, especially in sociolinguistic research.
