Abstract

This study is conducted to find out the pronunciation errors among sixthgrade students at SDN 1 Jatiluwih and analyze the factor causing their pronunciation error. The subjects in this study were nineteen sixth-grade students at SDN 1 Jatiluwih. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method because this study aimed to describe the findings. In collecting the data, the students were asked to sing a number of kids’ songs aloud, then recorded their performances, and transcribed the data. The data were analyzed using the theory proposed by Kenworthy (1987) about the types of pronunciation error and the causes of the error using theory proposed by Ladefoged (2001). The result of the study shows only three types of pronunciation error when students pronounced the kids’ songs. The types of pronunciation error are; substitutions in consonant and vowel sound, deletions in consonant sounds, and insertions in consonant and vowel sound. The most dominant types of error were substitutions error in consonant and vowel sound with 87 errors. It was also found three factors caused the pronunciation error, there are; mother tongue interference, sound systems differences between L1 and L2, and the influence of spelling English in pronunciation. The most dominant factor causing the pronunciation error was sound systems differences between L1 and L2 with 35 data.
