Abstract

The focus of this study is to identify the different kinds of derivational suffixes used in a selected politics article from CBS News. The research analyzed six selected political articles in CBS News, which contained a variety of derivational suffix phenomena. The data collection used observation methods and note-taking techniques in collecting the data. Two methodologies were employed: a quantitative method to display the frequency percentages of various types and functions of derivational affixes found in the data source, and a descriptive qualitative method to thoroughly explain each piece of data identified in the study. Plag (2002) theory was used to classify the types of derivational suffixes, while McCarthy (2002) theory was used to illustrate the derivational process with tree diagrams. The study found nominal suffixes (39%), verbal suffixes (4%), adjectival suffixes (37%), and adverbial suffixes (20%). Nominal suffixes were the most frequently used, appearing in 55 instances because nominal suffixes have many kinds of suffixes, while verbal suffixes were the least frequently used, with only 6 cases. This is because this type of suffix has the fewest kind of suffix. The morphological process of derivational suffixes primarily changes the grammatical or word class of the base word or root, resulting in a new word with a new meaning.
