THE CORRELATION BETWEEN GRAMMAR MASTERY AND WRITING ABILITY OF THE OF EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 MENGWI IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

The present study which made us of correlation research design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Mengwi in academic year 2023/2024. The samples of the research consisted of 50 students from 145 eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Mengwi in academic year 2023/2024 which were chosen by applying random sampling technique with lottery system. The data were collected through administering the research instrument which were in normality and homogeneity test and paragraph construction test. The results of normality and homogenous. The obtained data were statiscally analyzed by using Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ grammar mastery correlated with their writing ability. The students who had good grammar knowledge could achieve better achievement in writing paragraph. To sum up, the research findings confirmed that there was a significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability of the eighthgrade students of SMP Negeri 5 Mengwi in academic year 2023/2024.
