Abstract

This study aims to analyze types of derivational affixes and their function in the ‘’Little Woman’’novel. The data of this study were obtained from a novel entitled "Little Woman" by Loisa May Alcott consists of 43 chapter since it contains illustrations of the character in some pages and there are many words formed by derivational affixes. In collecting data, this study uses the observation method by reading, underlining, and then identifying the data found in the novel. A descriptive qualitative method is used in order to collect the data of this study. In analyzing the data, this study used the theory proposed by Katamba (1993) to find out the types and the theory proposed by Carstairs and MCarthy to know the function. There were 210 data of derivational affixes found including with derivational prefixes, such as, prefix un-. dis-, re-, pre-, en-, and in with 42 data or 13.55%. Meanwhile, there were also found derivational suffixes such as suffix -ly, -ful, -er, -ment, -hood, -ness, -ity, - ic, -al, -ion, -ship, -less, and -ish with 168 data or 86.45%. It can be concluded that derivational suffixes are the most apparent in the data source with suffix -ly as the dominant. Knowing the use of affixes will develop the mastering of vocabularies of English language
