Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of communication strategies andanalyze the functions of using communication strategies by a 6th grade Englishteacher in SDN 2 Jatiluwih. In conducting the study, this study used qualitativeresearch methods. There are two theories proposed by Dornyei (1995) regardingthe types and the function of communication strategies. This study used a table toshow the occurrence of communication strategies during teaching and learningprocess. After researching it was found 7 types of communication strategies wereused by the teacher during teaching and leraning process in the class. The strategiesthat were use by the teacher are code-switching, use of non-linguistic means, use offillers/hesitation devices, literal translation, appeal for help, message abandonment,and circumlocution. It was found that the use of communication strategies byteachers falls within all the functions proposed by Dornyei (1995). These functionsare avoidance or reduction strategies, achievement or compensatory strategies, andstalling or time-gaining strategies. Every types of communication strategies thatwere used by the teacher is to help the flow of the classroom to run smoothly.
