Abstract

Every individual intending to engage in conversation should grasp the significanceof turn-taking, particularly in mechanisms to minimize violations and ensuresmooth communication among participants. This study focuses on the conversationbetween the host and guest stars of the Graham Norton Show on the S25E12- TomHanks, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Holland, and Jake Gyllenhaal episode. This studyaims to identify the types of turn-taking mechanisms employed and to analyze howturn-taking unfolds between the host and guest stars during the conversation. Therewere 72 data in this research, and the descriptive qualitative method was utilized.Turn-taking mechanisms were analyzed using Stenstrom's (1994) theory andLambert's (2012) qualitative theory to support data analysis. The findings revealedthe presence of three types of turn-taking mechanisms: taking the turn, holding theturn, and yielding the turn. The turn-taking mechanism that mostly occurs on theGraham Norton Show is “taking the turn in the part of taking over” with 30occurrences. The significance of these findings lies in highlighting the importanceof turn-taking in facilitating smooth communication and minimizing disruptionsduring conversations.
