Abstract

The study focused on the politeness strategies utilized in the utterances of the maincharacters in the first season of the TV series "The Last of Us." The study's objectivewas to analyze the different types of politeness strategies employed by the maincharacters and examine the social factors that influenced these strategies. Aqualitative research method provided a comprehensive and well-structureddescription of the identified issues. Descriptive analysis was employed to elaborateon the politeness strategies and social factors present in the TV series. The data wascollected from the script and analyzed using the politeness strategies theoryproposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the theory of Social Factors byHolmes and Wilson (2017). An analysis of politeness strategies used by charactersin season one of "The Last of Us" revealed four main categories: Bald on Record(36.8%), Negative Politeness (23.9%), Positive Politeness (32.9%), and OffRecord Strategies (7.1%).These strategies were influenced by a total of 154identified social factors, with Age (42%) being the most prominent factor, followedby Gender (38%), Kinship (17%), and Social Status (3%).The study concluded thatvarious types of politeness strategies were evident in the utterances of the maincharacters, and these strategies were influenced by the social factors portrayed in"The Last of Us" season one.
