Abstract
This research study is intended the readers about development of speech actespecially performed in ‘’Four Lions’’ movie which begins with the types ofillocutionary acts and ends with intended meaning of illocutionary acts based onthe context of situation that are spoken in the characters. This data were taken fromthe related utterances found in the dialogues of the script ‘’Four Lions’’ movie. Themethod used in this research was created with a descriptive qualitative. Threetheories were applied in order to find out the data are the types of illocutionary acttheory by Searle (1979) also the types of meaning theory by Leech (1981) thatsupported by Halliday and Hasan (1989). The researcher collected data by watchingthe movie, reading the script, and then taking note of the conversations that arerelated to the problems. Research findings show that there are various types ofillocutionary act and each of illocutionary act has meaning based on the context thatare spoken by the character. A total of 34 types of illocutionary acts have beenidentified as the result of this study. Four categories were used to categorize thedata namely are assertive 4 data (11%), directive 18 data (53%), commissive 5 data(15%), and expressive 7 data (21%). And also, five types of meaning namely are;10 utterances (29%) data of conceptual meaning, 9 utterances (26%) data ofconnotative meaning, 2 utterances (6%) data of social meaning, 8 utterances (24%)data of affective meaning, and 5 utterances (15%) data of thematic meaning.Nevertheless, the meaning behind each utterances in ‘’Four Lions’’ movie scriptdepends on the context consist of field, tenor, and mode. However, this studydelivers that the most frequent type of illocutionary act found in Four Lions moviewas directive illocutionary act. Meanwhile, the most frequent types of meaning ofillocutionary act found in the ‘’Four Lions’’ movie was conceptual meaning toexpress the intention on their utterances.
