Abstract
This research aims that on categorizing the various types of illocutionary acts observed in the film "M3gan" and examining how the context of each situation enhances the understanding of these acts meanings. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to comprehensively analyze the data and address the research objectives. Both informal and formal methods were utilized to present and explain the findings. Three main theories were applied in the analysis process. Firstly, Yule's (1996) theory of illocutionary acts was used to identify and analyze the various types of illocutionary acts depicted in the movie. Secondly, Leech's (1981) theory was utilized to analyze the meaning of sentences within utterances. Additionally, Halliday and Hasan's (1989) framework for analyzing the context of situations was employed to address the secondary research question. The findings revealed that the characters in the "M3gan" movie performed a variety of illocutionary acts, including declarations, representatives, expressive, directives, and commissive. Out of the 79 instances identified in the movie, directive illocutionary acts were the most prevalent, totalling 30 occurrences, while declaration were the least frequent, comprising only 4 instances. Regarding the types of meaning observed in the illocutionary acts performed by all characters, this study identified five categories : conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, and reflected meaning. Among these, affective meaning emerged as the most dominant, occuring 55 times out of 80 instances.
