Abstract

This study examines the use of cohesive devices in the novel “Where theCrawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, with the aim of identifying the types ofcohesive devices used and analysing how they contribute to the coherence andoverall meaning of the narrative. In this study, the writer used Halliday andHasan’s (1976) theory and did not examine the whole page. The writer only tookone to three pages from each subchapter until the data was sufficient. Afterobserving and taking notes, the writer found that grammatical cohesion (84,16%)was used more often than lexical cohesion (15,84%). The use of grammaticalcohesion is dominated by personal reference (74,34%), especially the use of sheand her. For other types such as ellipsis and conjunction also contribute tomaintaining coherence in the text, the use of substitution is not found in thisnovel. The use of reiteration (13,88%) especially repetition is the most widelyused for the category of lexical cohesion. A balanced use of grammatical andlexical cohesion not only enhances the readability and comprehensibility of a textbut also engages the reader at a deeper level, making the reading experience bothenjoyable and easy to understand.
