AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING FOUND IN ANGELA TANOESOEDIBJO INSTAGRAM CAPTION

Code switching is a phenomenon in which individuals alternate between two or more languages in a single conversation or piece of writing. This phenomenon is not limited to spoken situations it is also often seen on social media. The study aims to identify and categorize code switching types in Angela Tanoesoedibjo's Instagram captions and analyze the function of expression in these captions. This research is concerned with the Indonesian-English code switching in Angela Tanoesoedibjo's Instagram captions in her Instagram account. This research uses descriptive qualitative research, where data is collected through observation and note taking methods. The study utilized an explanatory and qualitative approach to identify the findings related to the research based on Poplack's theory in Romaine (1995) for the type of code switching, as well as Leech's theory (1974) for the expression function of the caption. The results of this study show all types and functions of code switching are found in Angela Tanoesoedibjo's Instagram captions such as; tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching. In addition, there are five functions of code switching namely; information, expressive, directive, aesthetic, and phatic. Based on the data, Intrasentential switching was dominantly found in Angela Tanoesoedibjo's captions, With 27 data, while tag switching with only 3 data and inter-sentential switching with 7 data. Angela Tanoesoedibjo employs intra-sentential code switching to reach a diverse audience, emphasize important points, and demonstrate solidarity in a multilingual society. Her captions serve as informational tools, conveying crucial information to the public. As a public figure, she updates government activities, programs, and policies, helping the audience understand context, message content, and relevant developments, thus educating and explaining to the wider community.
