Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the features of women's language used by the main character in the TV series "SCANDAL" (2012). The aim is to identify the types of women's language features expressed by Olivia Pope and the functions of language in her speech. This study aims to enrich the knowledge of women's language features based on Lakoff's theory (1975) and is linked with the functions of language based on Jakobson's theory (1960). A descriptive qualitative method is employed, analyzing data by identifying, classifying, and interpreting the types of women's language features and their functions. It was found by the researcher that ten women's language features are employed by Olivia Pope, totaling 66 instances. This rating reflects her significant contribution and the frequency of discourse exhibiting women's language features. Olivia Pope primarily uses lexical fillers or hedges to convey hesitation or lack of conviction, demonstrating caution or diplomacy. Precise color terms are the least used aspect of her speech, indicating she does not prioritize intricate visual depictions. Her speech contains no explicit color references. Additionally, the study identified six functions in Olivia's speech, with 66 instances of language functions. Olivia Pope predominantly uses emotive functions in her language, while the poetic function is used the least. This study enhances the understanding of women's communication by examining the characteristics of women's language and its functions, thus preventing misinterpretations of their intended messages.
