AN ANALYSIS CODE MIXING FOUND IN NOVEL “PELAYARAN CINTA”BY SARIMAN AYOB

The study aims to find out the types and reasons of code mixing in novel “Pelayaran Cinta”. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed using the theory of types of code-mixing proposed by Suwito (1983). Moreover, the reasons od code mixing using the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991). In this study, two types of code mixing are found based on Suwito’s (1983) theory: outer code mixing and inner code mixing. The most dominant type found in novel is outer code mixing. Furthermore, seven reasons for code mixing are based found on Hoffman’s (1991) theory: talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocuter, and expressing group identity. The most dominant reasons found in novel is being emphatic about something.
