Abstract

The title of this research is The Analysis of Directive Illocutionary Acts in Avatar: The Last Airbender Mini Series. This research focused on analyzing and classifying the types of directive illocutionary acts used by all characters and the support of the function for directive illocutionary acts. This research applied the theory from Searle (1979) to classify the types of directive illocutionary acts uttered by all characters and the theory from Leech (1983) to analyze the function of directive illocutionary acts. The purpose of this research is to persuade people, especially youth, to act and involve themselves in a movement toward a better earth. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method conducted with library research. The data collection used the observation method, there are five steps start with watching the mini-series, transcribing, taking notes, listing the data, and categorizing the data. The gathered data was used and examined utilizing the qualitative method. The following are three procedures taken to analyze the data analysis. First, the data collected to classified into the five categories of directive illocutionary acts in Avatar: The Last Airbender using the theory by Searle (1979) consisting of command, request, permission, prohibition, and question. Second, the function of directive illocutionary acts by Leech (1983) consists of competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Last, is the supporting data about the context of the situation from Halliday and Hasan (1985). This data source was taken from 8 episodes in Avatar: The Last Airbender Mini Series. This method emphasizes the dynamic interplay between language and social context, highlighting the relevance of situational circumstances in affecting communication. This research found five types of directive illocutionary acts in the Mini Series entitled Avatar: The Last Airbender uttered by all characters. The data found in this mini-series are 102, the question has the highest frequency with (34,3%) percentage. The question is the most appealing type in this mini-series because it tells the loss of Aang who was raised from the ice, ranging from conflicts in personality, friendship, and family. Dealing with all these problems requires action through a command from an utterance that can make people take action to solve all problems. The lowest number of occurrences is permission with a (4,9%) percentage. The function of directive illocutionary acts is essential to support the types of directive illocutionary acts. Inside an utterance containing the directive illocutionary acts, knowing the function between participants and the language used in conversation.
