Abstract

This study aims to identify the kinds of figurative language and analyze the meaning of each figurative language found in Hozier's “Wasteland, Baby!” album. There are two main theories used to analyze the data in this study. There is two main theory used to analyze the data in this study. The first theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) in the book entitled Interpreting literature: preliminaries to literary judgment is used to identify the kinds of figurative language contained in the album "Wasteland, Baby!", while the second theory from Leech (1981) in the book entitled Semantics: The Study of Mening is used to analyze the meaning of each figurative language found in Hozier's "Wasteland, Baby!" album. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the data to answer the study problems. The results of this study show that there are seven kinds of figurative language found in the album "Wasteland, Baby!". The highest occurrence of figurative language is Metaphor with a frequency of 27 data (33.33%), Simile with a frequency of 18 data (22.22%), Personification with a frequency of 13 data (16.05%), Allusion with a frequency of 8 data (9.88%), Paradox with a frequency of 7 data (8.64%), and followed by Hyperbole and Irony with the same frequency of 4 data (4.94%) with a total of 81 data. This study found 4 different types of meanings in the song lyrics of Hozier's Wasteland, Baby! Album: affective, connotative, conceptual, and reflected meanings. Affective meaning is the meaning that appears most often in Hozier's song "Wasteland, Baby!" album.
