AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG WORD USAGE IN A VIDEO INTERVIEW CONTEXT

Employment of slang words has become a major development of modern language, it is widely used as an alternative to traditional formal English conversation whereas it originated mostly from urban cultures. Examining various examples of slang words in popular culture, the particular informal linguistic heavily attributed to the hip-hop or rap music industry such as Rich Chigga, one of the notable Indonesian artist, in his conversation with Joey Franchize. This study aims to identify conveyed slang words in the podcast video between Rich Chigga and Joey Franchize in discussing the main speaker’s ability in learning English through Internet. Theoretical frameworks such as identification of slang words types and the reason of their usage are employed in order to comprehensively analyze the spoken terms. Qualitative descriptive method is employed by using the podcast video as the main data source then followed by observing the entire object. The identified data then analyzed by referring to the theories related to slang words. Study results revealed four types of slang conveyed; Fresh and Creative (28,94%), Flippant (15.78%), Imitative (31,57%), Acronym (10,52%), and Clipping (13,15%) with the most identified term discovered in Imitative type. The particular reasons of slang words usage, ranging from achieving politeness (19.04%), emotive feeling (61,90%), and pursuit of self identity (4,76%), revealed that most of the terms are connected with rapping language style and therefore emotive feeling is the primary concern of the usage discovered within Rich Chigga and Joey Franchize podcast Youtube video.
