Abstract
This study focuses on the analysis of types of illocutionary acts and the meaning of illocutionary acts found in the short movie Purple Hearts. The research shows how illocutionary acts impact conversations. The study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts. It was found that 107 instances of illocutionary acts were identified. A qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The data were analyzed following the types of illocutionary acts proposed by Yule (1996) and the theory of context of situation proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1958; 12). There were 5 types of illocutionary acts found by the researchers: Directive acts, representative acts, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. The results showed that out of the 107 instances in the movie Purple Hearts, there are high occurrences of representative acts (42%). This has an impact on other parts, with 23% being directive acts, 16% commissives, 20% expressives, and 3% declarative acts.
