Abstract

An illocutionary act is an act when the speaker performs or requests the listeners to take an action. There are two problems are discussed in this study; 1) what types of illocutionary acts are found in Angela's Christmas movie and 2) how do the context of situations support the illocutionary act in Angela's Christmas movie. To determine the types of illocutionary acts, Searle's (1979) theory was used, followed by Halliday and Hasan's (1989) theory to analyze the context of the situation in the data source. A qualitative method was used in this study to investigate different types of illocutionary acts and the context of the situation. A table was employed to present the total data and percentage of utterances discovered in the movie using a quantitative method. By observing the movie and taking notes, the data were gathered using the observation method. The findings revealed a total of 69 data. The directive is the most commonly used, namely 30 data or 43%, an expressive consists of 17 data or 25%, an assertive consists of 14 data or 20%, finally the least type used is commissive consists of 8 data or 12%. This study also focused on analyzing the context of the situation in each utterance of the characters in this movie. The context of the situation consists of field, tenor, and mode. It was found that each utterance was identified and classified into each type of illocutionary act using the three types of the context of the situation.
