Abstract
This research investigated the categories and contextual situations of expressive illocutionary acts in PAW Patrol: The Movie 2021. The study had two main objectives: to identify the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the movie's dialogue and to examine the contextual situations that contributed to these acts. The research employed an observation method and a qualitative approach for data analysis, and categorized various expressive acts by their frequency and relative percentage. The identified acts included apologizing, thanking, condoling, complaining, protesting, boasting, complimenting, praising, and greeting. The findings indicated that protests were the most frequent expressive act, occurring 31 times and constituting 25% of all identified acts, highlighting their prominence in the movie’s interactions. Conversely, condolences were the least common, with only 2 occurrences, accounting for 2% of the total. Other acts, such as apologizing, thanking, complaining, boasting, and greeting, were recorded with varying frequencies, each contributing uniquely to the overall composition of expressive acts. This distribution illustrated the diverse ways in which characters expressed emotions in PAW Patrol: The Movie 2021, ranging from gratitude and sorrow to dissatisfaction and pride. The theoretical framework for this research was based on Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) classification of illocutionary acts. Additionally, the contextual analysis drew on Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) theory. These insights provided a deeper understanding of character interactions and the role of expressive language in animated movies
