Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the phenomenon of flouting maxim in the movie "A Man Called Otto" using the theory of conversational maxims proposed by Joan Cutting (2002) and the context of situation theory proposed by M.A.K. Halliday (1985). The study found that various types of flouting maxims were present in the movie, with the maxim of relation being the most frequently flouted, occurring in 8 data. The maxim of quantity followed closely with 7 data, while the maxims of quality and manner were both flouted with 4 data. These findings reveal that the characters in the movie deviated from expected conversational norms in various ways to achieve specific effects, such as building suspense, creating humor, or advancing the plot through subtle subtext. The reasons behind the flouting of maxims in the movie were also analyzed using Halliday's theory of context of the situation. The context within which a language interaction takes place offers participants valuable insights into the meaning being conveyed. Halliday proposed three aspects of the contextual situation, namely field, tenor, and mode. The analysis of the data showed that the characters flouted maxims to convey hidden meanings, soften their messages, build relationships, or express frustration. By considering the context of the situation, the study was able to provide a deeper understanding of the reasons behind the flouting of maxims in the movie "A Man Called Otto."
