Abstract

This thesis examines the illocutionary acts in the movie "A Tourist's Guide to Love" through the Searle's speech act theory (1976) and Halliday and Hassan's context of situation theory (1985). By analyzing the dialogues, the study identifies and categorizes the types of illocutionary acts performed by the characters, and revealing how the meaning of these acts contribute character interaction. The research employs a qualitative approach, focusing on the five categories of illocutionary acts: assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. The meaning of illocutionary acts supported by the context of situation which are field, tenor, and mode. Based on the result of this study, there were 31 data of illocutionary act that can be divided into 8 (25,80%) data of assertive act, 7 (22,58%) data of directive act, 5 (16,1%) data of commisive act, 10 (32,25%) data of expressive act, and 1 (3,22%) data of declarative act. Findings show that expressive illocutionary acts are the most prevalent, accounting for 32.25% of the total acts identified. The results offer valuable implications for linguists, filmmakers, and language educators, demonstrating the significance of illocutionary acts in enhancing communication and storytelling in movies.
