Abstract

The aims of this research is to examine the various types of figurative language and determine the most prevalent type in the movie "Free Guy." Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study employed content analysis to identified and analyzed the types of figurative language present in "Free Guy" using Leech (1978) and Barthes' (1988) theoretical framework. The analysis identified a total of 43 instances of figurative language, including 11 (25%) similes, 13 (30%) metaphors, 3 (7%) personifications, 8 (19%) metonyms, and 8 (19%) hyperboles. Understanding both denotative and connotative meanings improves our grasp of language and communication. Denotative meanings provide clear and direct information. Connotative meanings add emotional and cultural context, making communication richer and allowing speakers to express feelings and nuances. The dominant form of figurative language observed in the film is metaphor. The conclusion of this research highlights that the use of figurative language in "Free Guy" significantly enriches the narrative and adds thematic depth. Furthermore, it provides insights into how linguistic creativity supports storytelling in contemporary cinema, enhancing both the viewerrs' experience and the overall impact of the film.
