Abstract

The focus of this study is to identify the different kinds of derivational affixes used in the BBC News "War in Ukraine." This study implied two methodologies: a quantitative method was utilized to display the frequency percentages of different types and functions of derivational affixes found in the data source, and a descriptive qualitative method was used to give a thorough explanation for each piece of data found in the study. The research was conducted using many BBC News stories about the "War in Ukraine," which contained a variety of derivational affix phenomena. A noun derived from a verb (64.35%), an adjective derived from a verb (3.70%), a verb derived from a noun (0.93%), an adjective derived from a noun (7.87%), a noun derived from an adjective (3.70%), and an adverb derived from an adjective (14.81%) were found in this study based on the analysis. The following functions of class-maintaining affixes were observed: a noun derived from a noun (2.78%), an adjective derived from an adjective (0.93%), and a verb derived from a verb (0.93%). These affixes were employed to preserve a morpheme within the same class. The majority of the research's data highlighted how simple it was to generate nouns through derivational affixes, which made this type of data quite common.
