Abstract

The study concerns illocutionary speech acts in Randall Park’s Speech Video at UCLA 2023. This study is aimed to answer the research problems, which comprise of (1) What are the types of illocutionary acts found in Randall Park’s Speech Video at UCLA 2023; and (2) What is the function of the illocutionary act used by Randall Park’s Speech Video at UCLA 2023. The observation method is used in this study to collect the data from Randall Park’s Speech Video at UCLA 2023. The data in this study were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative technique to find out the type implied. The data in this research was a speech video downloaded from the UCLA YouTube channel and analyzed by applying the theory of illocutionary types and functions proposed by Searle (1979) and Leech (1983) respectively. The result of this analysis shows 54 utterances containing types of illocutionary acts, such as: assertive, directive, commisive, and expressive. Assertive are the most utterances delivered by Randall Park’s Speech Video at UCLA 2023 showing 44 utterances or (81,4%). It is followed by expressive, directive, and commissive which the occurrence of 5 utterances (9,2%), 4 utterances (7,4%), and 1 utterance (0,2%). Declaration is not found. Moreover, the analysis only found 3 functions of the illocutionary act. They are competitive, convivial, and collaborative.
