Abstract

This study focused on one of the most well-known types in speech acts namely illocutionary acts which mean a physical action from the speaker’s speech. This study aims to examine the five types of illocutionary acts as well as defines the situational contexts of the illocutionary utterances. The data of this study is from the main characters’ utterances in the DC League of Super-Pets movie. There were two theories employed in analyzing the study; Searle (1979) to classify the five categories of illocutionary acts and Halliday and Hassan (1989) to define the context of situation. Qualitative method was applied in analyzing the illocutionary acts and the situational context. The data was collected using observation methods by watching, taking note, and classifying the main characters' utterances. The data were presented with both formal and informal methods, which were presented in table and explained descriptively. The result of this study shows the five categories of illocutionary acts were found. There are 83 utterances from the main characters found in the DC League of Super-Pets movie. The directives act become the most frequently used in the total data 38 (48%), whereas the declarative acts become the least used in the total data 2 (0,2%). The illocutionary acts were analyzed and explained together with the context of the situation.
