The Analysis of Complex Sentences Found In “Reminders of Him” Novel by Colleen Hoover

The study concerns with the complex sentences contains in “Reminders of Him” novel by Colleen Hoover. The study aims to analyze the types of subordinate clause found in the novel, along with the constituent structure, which then portrayed through tree diagrams. This study uses qualitative method to conduct a clear and well-organized description about the problems that was identified. Observation method is used in collecting the data. Several steps were done by the researcher, such as reading the whole novel carefully while taking notes on sentences which categorized as complex sentence. After reading and taking note sessions are done, the researcher wrote down all of the complex sentences found in the novel and classify them into each type of subordinate clause of complex sentence. Then, the researcher completed the research by portraying the constituent structure of the complex sentences, to show the structure of the sentence itself. The types of subordinate clause were analyzed by applying the theory from Miller (2002) and the theory by Kroeger (2005) to analyze the constituent structure. The study concludes that adverbial subordinate clause is the most dominant type of subordinate clause used in the novel, followed by complement clause, and then relative clause.
