Abstract
This study aims at identifying the types and functions of slang in the film Die Hart. American slang is often associated with teenagers or the black community. Therefore, it is interesting to explore slang in American families as a whole. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with sociolinguistics as the framework of the study. The film script served as the primary data source. The study utilized Allan and Burridge's (2006) theory of slang word types and Hymes' (1989) theory of slang word functions. Two main findings emerge from this study. The types of slang words are fresh and creative: 9 (28%), flippant 8 (25%), imitative 7 (22%), acronym 3 (9%) and clipping 5 (16%). Meanwhile, the second result is the slang functions of the use of slang. There are seven functions in this film. They are addressing 4 (6%), creating intimate atmosphere 2 (3%), initiating relaxed conversation 4 (6%), expressing impression 3 (5%), expressing anger 2 (2%), humiliating 1 (1%) and showing intimacy 1 (1%). This study is expected to provide a better knowledge of American slang and a better understanding of slang terms.
