An Analysis Directive Illocutionary Act Found In "The Magician's Elephant" Movie

This study aimed to identify the types of directive illocutionary acts found in the movie The Magician’s Elephant and to analyze the meanings of these directive illocutionary acts. The research method used was a qualitative analysis with data sourced from the movie The Magician’s Elephant. This study used theory proposed by Searle and Vanderveken (1985) for analyze the types of directives illocutionary acts and theory proposed by Leech (1983) to analyze the meanings. And also supporting theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1989) to analyze the context of situation. This study found types of directive illocutionary acts with 77 utterances containing directive illocutionary acts. First, the most dominant type found in this movie was asking with 31 utterances (57.38%), second was telling with 15 utterances (27.78%), followed by insisting with 8 utterances (14.81%), ordering with 7 utterances (12.49%), commanding with 4 utterances (7.41%), directing with 3 utterances (5.56%), requesting with 3 utterances (5.56%), entreating with 3 utterances (5.56%), supplicating with 2 utterances (3.70%), and the last one was begging with 1 utterance (1.85%). The conclusion of this study was that it made a significant contribution to the field of linguistics, particularly in the study of directive illocutionary acts. These findings can enrich linguistic theories related to illocutionary acts and their use in everyday communication.
