Abstract
This study examines the types and effects of slang in "Creed 3," employing a qualitative descriptive approach within a sociolinguistic framework. The film's script, consisting of a total of 29 slang words, serves as the primary dataset, analyzed to explore how slang contributes to enhancing character authenticity, enriching narrative dynamics, and fostering audience engagement within American cinematic discourse. Chapman's (2007) theory categorizes slang into primary (32%, 9 instances) and secondary types (68%, 20 instances), so the dominant slang type is mostly secondary slang. While Eble's (1996) theory guides the identification of effects such as informality (34%), group discussion (21%), and opposite to authority (45%), which means that slang words categorized as opposite to authority are the ones that are dominantly used compared to other effects. other. By examining the linguistic nuances of slang in this context, this study provides insights into its role as a cultural marker and communicative tool in contemporary film dialogue.
