Abstract
The study is concerned with the type of hate speech found in the comment section of Selena Gomez’s Instagram account and the type of face-threatening act (FTA). The study aims to analyze the type of hate speech found in the comment section and the type of FTA’s theory in each comment of the type of hate speech that was found. The study used a qualitative method with a descriptive design to analyze the data. The data source is taken from the comment section of Selena Gomez’s Instagram account. The researcher found 17 haters who commented on Selena using hate speech. The result of the study indicates that 7 comments were marked as hate speech in the form of insulting, 5 comments as defamation, 2 comments as provoking, 1 comment as spreading hoaxes, and 2 comments as body shaming. The type of hate speech found that the insulting type is the most prevalent type of hate speech. Meanwhile, the type of Face Threatening Act (FTA) includes 8 comments as positive faces, 8 comments as negative faces, and 1 comment as positive and negative faces. The positive face and negative face are both dominant that are found in the comment.
