Abstract

Every language served various functions in its use, including in film dialogues. Film dialogues were crafted to mirror everyday conversations, which meant many examples of language functions could be found in films. This thesis aimed (1) to describe the types of language functions used by the main character when speaking with supporting characters in The Trial of the Chicago 7 movie and (2) to analyze the context of the situation of the main character’s utterances when talking with other defendants and the lawyer in the movie, supporting the analysis of the types of language functions. The data were taken from a movie entitled The Trial of the Chicago 7. The theory used to analyze the type of language function was the theory proposed by Holmes (2013) and theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1989) is used to analyze the context of the situation. The analysis was done by presenting the data in a table and those data were classified based on its language function then it was explained based on the types of language function and followed by the context of the situation. The type of language function found were 23 data, (36.99%) refer to the directive function, (30.74%) expressive function, phatic function (4.90%), referential function (27.37%). The context of the situation was analyzed in order to find out how the field, the tenor, and the mode helped to identify the types of language function in utterance produced by the main character of The Trial of the Chicago 7 movie.
