Abstract

Illocutionary act conveys the hidden message of the utterances. The study of illocutionary act is purposed to explore the implied meaning of utterances. This study aims to find out the types of illocutionary act and analyses the meaning of illocutionary acts in the utterances of the main character found in “The Trolls 2016” movie. In this research the data source is the movie entitled The Trolls 2016. In conducting the research, the study used descriptive qualitative method. Moreover, the data were collected through observation method this study applied two theories to investigate the main concerns. First, the types of illocutionary act are analyzed by Yule’s theory (1996) and the types of meaning is based on Leech’s theory (1981). The findings of this research were presenter by formal and informal method, for informal method, the data was presented by using narrative form and formal method is used to recognize the numbers illocutionary acts found in the movie and the finding are presented by using tables and percentages. Based on the results of this study, there are 70 data of illocutionary act that can be divided into 15 (21%) data of representative act, 25 (37%) data of directive act, 15 (21%) data of commissive act, 12 (17%) data of expressive act, and 3 (4%) data of declaration act. The most dominant illocutionary act that occurred in this movie is directive act. However, the type with the least occurrence is declarative act.
