Abstract

This research investigates code-switching behaviors observed in the utterances of Valerie Thomas on Denny Sumargo's YouTube Channel. Drawing on sociolinguistic theories, the study aims to analyze the types and reasons behind codeswitching in this specific context. The methodology involved a qualitative analysis. The data collection was based on a detailed transcription of selected episodes. Poplack's (1980) theory was used to identify the types of code-switching, while Hoffman's (1991) theory was used to identify the reasons for code-switching. The analysis also explored seven distinct reasons for code-switching, with a particular focus on the dominant motivations. The findings suggest that intra-sentential switching is the most prevalent type, with 53 instances (84.13%), while "talking about a particular topic" is the most common reason, accounting for 27 instances (42.86%). Valerie Thomas frequently uses code-switching to express her feelings, particularly when discussing her personal experiences. The topics in her conversations vary widely, including her schooling, dealing with the pandemic, societal views on racial differences, nationalism, and more. This study reveals that Valerie Thomas utilizes English to facilitate her expression of thoughts and emotions. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of considering cultural and social factors in understanding code-switching phenomena. The research concludes with suggestions for future studies, emphasizing the need for broader investigations across various media platforms and linguistic contexts to enrich our understanding of language dynamics, particularly within multilingual societies.
