Abstract
The study concerns the slang that occurs in the characters utterances in the Senior Year movie. The study aims to analyze the types of slang spoken by each character in the Senior Year movie and the social factors that influenced the use of slang in the movie. This study use the descriptive-qualitative method to provide a clear and well-organized explanation of the difficulties observed. A descriptive study in textual analysis is used to comment on the slang that occurs in the Senior Year movie. The data were taken from the script and movie and analyzed by applying the Types of Slang theory proposed by Allan & Burridge (2006) and the theory of Social Factors by Holmes (2013). Based on the research, there are 32 (41%) fresh and creative types, 18 (23%) flippant types, 8 (10%) acronym types, 10 (13%) imitative types, and the last is 10 (13%) clipping. The study concludes that fresh and creative slang types are the most widely used slang types in the movie, with the highest percentage. The least used slang type is the acronym type, with the lowest percentage. Participants, setting, topic, and function played an important role in the conversation in the movie. Based on the analysis carried out, only four language functions were found that influence the use of slang. There are 41 (52%) expressive, 10 (13%) directive, 24 (31%) referential, and the last is 3 (4%) phatic.
