The Analysis Of Subordinate Clause In Complex Sentence Found In BBC News

This study is concerned with the subordinate clause in complex sentence found in “BBC News” website. This study aims to analyze the function of subordinate clause in complex sentence and the constituent structure of the complex sentence found in “BBC News” website. The data of this study is taken from “BBC News” website especially from 3 news. The first news entitled China: Police rescue 1,000 cats, bust illicit trade of feline meat published on 26 October 2023, the second is Indonesia: TikToker jailed for two years over pork video published on 20 September 2023 and the last is Israeli tanks surround north Gaza's Indonesian Hospital published on 20 November 2023. The data were analyzed by using qualitative method to conduct a clear analysis according to the problems defined in this study. The theory proposed by Aarts (2001) is used to analyze the functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence and the theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) is used to analyze the constituent structure of complex sentence. The theory proposed by Quirk et al. (1985) is also used as a supporting theory to analyze the type of the sentence. The result of this study is presented through formal and informal method. Based on the finding of this study, there are only three of the four types functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence are found in “BBC News” website. This study found 24 complex sentences in “BBC News” website. From three functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence that found, subordinate clause functioning as adjunct is the most frequently found in the data which are 16 data or 66% from the total data then followed by subordinate clause functioning as direct object which are 5 data or 21% from the total data, and the least frequently used in the captions is subordinate clause functioning as complements within phrase which is 3 data or 13% from the total data. Each type of functions of subordinate clause in complex sentence has different placement in the sentence. The subordinate clause found placed in the middle and at the end of the complex sentence.
