Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which the English language Facilitators at Kampus Mengajar Mandiri Program done code switching in teaching English. This study has two specific objectives, namely (1) to identify the types of code switching done by facilitators in teaching English at SD N 1 Jatiluwih and (2) to analyze the reasons of code switching done by facilitators in teaching English on SD N 1 Jatiluwih. The data were collected through the application of the observation method, which involved recording, listening, and note taking on the utterances spoken by two facilitators during the teaching process. In order to classify the different types of code switching, this study used a qualitative approach using Apple and Muysken theory (1987). Related to the reason of code switching, this study applied the theory of Hoffman (1991). According to the results, this study found 299 utterances representing code switching. The findings indicate that all three categories of code-switching were identified, such as: intra-sentential, tagswitching, and inter-sentential-switching. The 299 utterances of code switching they were categorized into, 61 data (20.40%) of tag switching, 210 data (70.23%) data of intra-sentential switching, and 28 data (9.36%) of inter-sentential switching. Furthermore, for reasons for code switching, all reasons for code switching were found in the research, with a total of 299 data, there were 322 utterances can be classified as reason of code switching, which 23 utterances were classified into more than one reason. With details as follow; 209 (64.90%) data are categorized as talking about a particular topic, followed by interjection with 59 (18.32%) data, continued by repetition used for clarification with 20 (6.21%) data, quoting someone else with 17 (5.27%) data, 13 (4.03%) data of Intention of clarifying speech content for interlocutor, 3(0.93%) data of being empathetic about something, and 1(0.31%) data of expressing group identity.
